Dialectical Behavior Therapy
DBT stands for Dialectical Behavior Therapy. It was originally created by Marsha Linehan to
help people with borderline personality disorder, but it is now used for issues like emotion
dysregulation, self-harm, suicidal thoughts, depression, anxiety and more. DBT blends two
ideas; acceptance and change. Accepting yourself and your emotions as they are and changing
behaviors and thoughts that are causing problems.
The key components of DBT are mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation and
interpersonal effectiveness. It is very structured and skills-focused.
Angie Pecsenye, MA, LPC, NCC and Ryan Pecsenye, MS, LLP were trained at the DBT
Foundational Training in Lansing over fifteen years ago when they worked for Lincoln
Behavioral Services, a community mental health clinic. Angie and Ryan continue to use DBT to
help our clients and train all Lotus clinicians with this modality, which is highly effective.
