Trauma physically changes our brains as the amygdala becomes over-aroused on a regular basis during traumatic events. This changes the way our body responds to stressful events.
Often, clients will come to therapy and be hesitant to bring up past events that they have suppressed bring and are afraid of opening Pandora’s Box, but as trauma therapists, we know that what we resist persists. It is important
to share your story and feel your authentic feelings to heal the negative effects of trauma.
Thankfully, we have some amazing approaches to heal trauma in EMDR and Brainspotting. EMDR therapy focuses directly on the memory and is intended to change the way that the memory is stored in the brain, thus reducing and eliminating the problematic symptoms. Brainspotting is also a powerful tool that works by
identifying, processing and releasing core neurophysiological sources of emotional and body pain, trauma, and dissociation. Both treatments are wonderful for the treatment of PTSD and have greatly reduced the length of treatment for clients.
