Anxiety disorders are a group of mental illnesses that can cause constant and overwhelming fear. The types of disorders range from General Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Phobia Related Disorders such as specific phobia, social phobia, agoraphobia, separation anxiety disorder or selective mutism. Symptoms of anxiety can include; panic, fear, uneasiness, feelings of doom or danger, sleeping problems, feeling cold, sweaty, numb, tingling sensations, shortness of breath heart palpitations, dry mouth, nausea, dizziness, ruminating (being unable to stop thinking about a problem), inability to concentrate, and avoiding feared objects or places. Your therapist will utilize cognitive behavioral strategies to help you change the way you are thinking about perceived triggers and utilize relaxation strategies such as progressive muscle relaxation, deep breathing and mindfulness and distress tolerance exercises to help gain freedom from crippling anxiety.
